Picking Interior Colors For Your Home
Whether you’re building a new home or remodeling your current space, picking out colors and styles can be an enjoyable experience, but also a challenging one! Lampert Lumber has a wide variety of products to choose from and we’d be happy to assist you with your project. Here are a few quick tips on picking out interior colors for your home.
Start with colors you love
The best way to begin your search for the right color or style is to start with what you love. This will ensure that you don’t limit yourself to traditional color schemes and allow you to create a space that truly showcases your personal style. Get inspiration from things that are already in your home – throw pillows, bedding, a piece of artwork, an area rug, a patterned fabric or even table linens are a great place to find color ideas. One method that could be helpful is to select three colors from an object in your home currently, such as one of the aforementioned items, and bring it to the store or to a meeting with your designer. From there you can choose one out of the three to be the main color in the room and the two remaining as complementary colors.
Do research and plan ahead
Ideally, you’ll want to do your research and gather potential samples of colors and styles you like before you do anything else. This means everything from cabinets and countertops down to paint or wallpaper selections. One strategy you could take is to draw out floor plans for the rooms that are part of your project, and list what colors from furniture, art or other decorations will be in each room. This will give you a decent understanding of the current color scheme in your space and allow you to try out adding in new colors.
Know the difference in colors
Different colors create different feelings in a room and can even make spaces feel bigger or smaller. Knowing what specific “feel” you are going for in a room is helpful in narrowing down your interior color selection. Warmer colors are generally used in rooms such as the kitchen, family and living areas, and the dining room, whereas lighter colors tend to be used in rooms such as offices, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Another thing to keep in mind is the difference in whites. You may think there can only be one white, but there are pure whites and warm whites, and usually warmer whites are used in rooms where there is not a lot of natural light or when you are wanting to make a large room seem cozier. Oppositely, a cooler white can help open up a space.
